Yellow-eyed penguin usually arrive ashore alone after a day's fishing so they are a bit unusual compared to other species.

Mandy's mate

17/4/2020

Comments

Those of you who have been following us for a while will remember Mandy. She was an old girl and she did not show up for breeding so her mate had the season off. He has not been well and been a guest at our rehab facility since late January. It took him forever to fatten up and to start the moult but he he finally getting there. Here he is preening his new dive suit and soon it will be time to let him go and find a new mate.

Pablo's last meal

13/4/2020

Comments

He was our last chick - three weeks later than anyone else and quite the miracle chick. He was happy to take his last meal in the soft release pen and then it was time to open the gate. He was gone the next day, obviously he was in rather good nick, nice and fat and ready to learn how to fish. He was such a delight to care for - bon voyage little one, do well out there and come back some time!

Before and after

This is Shannon and her mate just as they started their annual moult and when they were almost done. Quite a spectacular transformation - and they did it all by themselves, no TLC required from us! Well done, you two!
