Our Fiordland crested penguin on our beach and ready to go. It took him/her only about 5-10 minutes to orient and then it headed away. It was so ready to go play in the big blue again. Fare well and hope you catch many yummy fish on the way home!
This bird was just enchanting and so beautiful with his/her new feathers that a portrait was in order. The Fiordland crested penguins have these delightful white streaks on their cheeks and gorgeous brown eyes; the crest ain't bad either.
It was time to let our lovely Fiordland crested penguin go home. They live on the west coast of the South Island but are found regularly on the east coast as well - they used to breed here. S/he will find the way and has a microchip in case someone comes across him/her over on the other side.
It is vital for the mental well being of all our patients that they have company and can (at least) see another penguin. Here we have a post-fledging yellow-eyed penguin chick in the neighbouring pen to keep the Fiordland crested penguin company. Both LOVE standing on their box!
This is a Fiordland Crested penguin that we had the privilege of looking after for a while in our rehab. S/he was found trying to moult and was terribly underweight - salmon fixed that. Unlike the Snares and Erect crested penguins that we had earlier this species has white cheeks - and (also) a fabulous hair-do!!
