Your visit to see the penguins at Katiki Point Historic Reserve

To visit the penguins at Katiki Point is a privilege. You have the opportunity to experience New Zealand taonga (crown jewels), the penguins of Aotearoa, New Zealand. This opportunity is due to the dedication of Penguin Rescue, in collaboration with Te Runanga O Moeraki, the Department of Conservation and various other stakeholders.

Upon entering the gates at Katiki Pt, you are stepping onto a place steeped in ecological, historical and spiritual significance, and we request that you demonstrate the upmost respect at all times.

Therefore it is important that you;

• keep to the viewing times as outlined below,
  
• keep within the boundaries of the reserve,
  
• maintain a safe distance of 10 metres between yourself and the wildlife.
  
• do not use flash photography as it can severely damage the eyesight of the penguins.

As a visitor to the reserve, if you see anyone behaving in an inappropriate way, please remind them of the expectations of being on the reserve.

Viewing times

The reserve is currently open from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm
The best time to view penguins is 2 hours before closing.
These times are determined on behalf of the land owners by Te Runanga O Moeraki.

Where are we?

On the southern most tip of the Moeraki Peninsula is the Katiki Point Historical reserve.
The access is via a metal road from Tenby Street in the Moeraki Village, called Lighthouse road. The reserve is 4km from Moeraki village.
Katiki point has a rich history, beginning with the establishment of a Maori village and Pa. Traces of the historical terraces and food pits remain.

Freedom camping is not permitted at the Katiki Pt Historic Reserve. Any attempt to do so will invoke a $200 fine from the Waitaki District Council.
​There are campgrounds in Moeraki village and Hampden.
