Hello friends and family Once again, the week began with great weather. I picked fruit, cut hedges and relaxed for a couple of days. On Tuesday, we released 9 penguins and picked up one chick. There were 2 White flippered penguins fishing in the bay with terrible feathers so many trips were made down to see if they had come ashore. Finally, Chris, Hiltrun and I went down after dinner and rescued one of them. The watch is on for the other. Wednesday was our day to attend the Hui about managing the reserve. It was a pleasant meeting and the group acknowledged my MNZM with a beautiful book which I really appreciate. The team was slow out of the starting block on Thursday which was a good thing – we saw a pod of at least 100 dolphins playing off the headland. It is not often that we see such a large number and usually they are travelling or fishing. These ones were playing, leaping and we were able to watch them for a long time before they moved off. We then carried on and did the monitoring rounds. We picked up 2 penguins and released 8. One of the penguins that we picked up was Mrs 43. One of her chicks had died with Malaria and her partner had been picked up the week before and treated for Malaria. She is a high-risk bird. On Friday, Elaine and I ran one of the Malaria test kits, and she tested positive. She is now being treated. Chris and Hiltrun arrived last night and we will be doing the rounds today.
Have a great week! Rosalie Hello friends and family The start of the week was tee shirt weather, but the weather now has and autumn feeling to it. This week we brought in 2 penguins and released 8. We now have 19 YEPs and 4 White flippereds in care. On Monday the local primary schools brought their years 7 & 8 students out for a visit. They are a bright bunch and interested in the lighthouse and the wild-life. It was my Top-tip day on Wednesday so I went to town in the afternoon. I had Maccers for lunch which was a bit of a treat. Wednesday was also special because we got notice that DOC will put $2000 towards our Malaria expenses. This is wonderful news and will supplement the $1000 from the Hampden Community Energy group. Michele and Charlie joined our Thursday working group and watered the ferns at the Moeraki colony. I was hoping that it would bring on the rain, but we only got 1 mm! ON Saturday, after a frosty start, we collected our 100th YEP patient for the season. It has been such a tough year for the penguins. They would be decimated without our help and the season is not over yet!
Have a great week! Rosalie |
