Hello friends and family Time flies by when we are having fun and I don’t know where this week went! I picked up cousin Dan from the bus on Sunday evening and on Monday we went to the Hampden house and planted some Kowhai trees and had dinner with Elaine. On Tuesday, the team came and there was more tree planting at the Moeraki colony, then some track work at Katiki Beach. On Wednesday, it was Kakabeak at Hampden. The penguins are all out fishing at the moment, except for our hospital patient who is now treated for Malaria and putting on weight at a great rate. When you start at only 3.5 Kg, this does take a bit of time, but we expect him to go this week. On Thursday the team planted another 10 trees at the Moeraki colony and Dan and I went there later on to see penguins – there were more down the hill here ! On Friday we made a trip to Dunedin and then on Saturday morning Dan left on the bus. Elaine and Hiltrun came for the day and we worked on fallen trees at the Moeraki colony. The sun shone and it was a warm 13 degrees C. Still no penguins coming home early there!
Have a great week! Rosalie Hello friends and family Sunday was a little nicer weatherwise and so I retrieved one of the cameras in the reserve and it showed a stoat and a possum – oh dear! We often see cats but maybe are getting a little complacent with the trapping. On Monday Hiltrun and I went to the workshop on chick raising. Some real progress was made, but a lot more will be needed to create a future for Yellow-eyed penguins. After the 3-hour workshop, we went out for dinner, and I got home around 7 pm. The team came out on Tuesday, and we found a starving juvie by nest 23. He had come home and needs a helping hand to get on his way again. In the afternoon we planted another 8 trees in glorious sunshine. I phoned the COVID hotline and cannot get my jabs until September. So be it. Wednesday was ideal indoor weather and so I worked on the annual accounts. The amount of support we get is fantastic. Every dollar counts and we are very grateful. On Thursday there was not a penguin to be seen except for hospital bird and he has Malaria. What a well-mannered penguin. He fledged from the wild so has never been fed before but has quickly learned to take fish from the hand. In the afternoon we planted another 10 trees. Friday was round 2 on the accounts and Hiltrun and Elaine joined me for the rounds on Saturday. Once again, the reserves were empty and smelling much sweeter after the rain!
Have a great week! Rosalie Hello friends and family Last week good fortune aligned, and I had a wonderful week in Queenstown with family. We arrived on Sunday and did a tour of Queenstown on Monday before it began to snow. On Tuesday we woke to a winter wonderland – snow on the road, the deck and even the lakeshore. We gave Olivia rides on the slopes of the local park and built a few snowmen. On Wednesday, it was up the gondola to do 6 rides on the luge. I was the slowest! Thursday was the day to go up the mountains to the Remarkables Ski field. It was a magical day – sunshine, no wind, and lots of happy people. On Friday I had a walk along the lake shore and on Saturday we went to Glenorchy to admire the spectacular scenery. On Sunday I came home again. Wow! The team took care of the place and we caught up on Tuesday to plan our next project which was to plant some trees. On Thursday we got the job done. We are now in the 2021 /22 penguin season – no penguins in care which is great, but a lot of admin to do which works well because it is very cold outside at the moment. The penguins are all out fishing and so pictures are hard to get. I have installed a trail camera on the landing so hopefully, will do better net week.
Have a great week! Rosalie |
